When I was growing up in a small town in northwestern South Dakota, all we had was the downtown. The highlight of each day was going to the post office, visiting with staff and others. I still enjoy this routine at the La Crosse Post Office. The friendly postal employees know me and we converse briefly about my children serving in various countries.
I often patronize a coffee shop. Each shop, with its efficient baristas, have a unique atmosphere to offer.
Before returning home to my lovely south side, I partake of additional downtown amenities: the main library to research and procure home school resources and to shop at some of the unique businesses downtown.
Let us be thankful for Crossfire Ministries downtown. Good citizens are emerging.
As a former city councilwoman, I represented the wonderful 15th District. I did my utmost to advocate for my constituents. However, I firmly believe the life of a community is measured by the vitality of its historical downtown.
My home school and I were the original CLEAN TEAM - an acronym coined by my children - Citizens Leading Environmental Action Needed To Endure Another Monday.
DMI director (and servant leader), Tim Kabat, and his red T-shirted volunteers can still be seen downtown cleaning streets. I encourage others to take their turn for a couple of seasons as we did. After all, the health of La Crosse's downtown is dependent upon us all.
